Gantt chart JulAugSepOctNovCherriesPeachesPlumsPearsApples Each task becomes a floating bar across a calendar, showing when it starts, how long it runs, and what it overlaps. The form is for planning: sequence and timing, not quantity. It is named for Henry L. Gantt, the industrial engineer whose charts spread through American arsenals and shipyards during the First World War. Wallace Clark, who wrote the first book on them, put the idea in one sentence: “Work planned and work done are shown in the same space in their relation to each other and in their relation to time” (Wallace Clark, The Gantt Chart: A Working Tool of Management, 1922, p. v).
