The value sits at the dot; the stem connects it back to zero. When many categories have similar, large values, a row of solid bars becomes a heavy block of ink, and the lollipop lightens it. Karsten warned that a bar can be too thin as well as too thick: “Too light or narrow a bar, such as a thin line, has no emphasis or force. But too wide or heavy a bar introduces two-dimensional rather than linear conceptions in the mind of the reader” (Karl G. Karsten, Charts and Graphs, 1923, p. 85).
