A bump chart answers one question well: who passed whom, and when? The cost is that ranks hide margins, so a narrow lead looks the same as a wide one. Show the underlying values too whenever the size of a lead matters. The form comes from rowing: in the Oxford and Cambridge bumps races, begun in 1815 and 1827, each boat chases the one ahead, and rowing histories printed a chart of every year’s finishing order.
