Remove the pie’s center and it becomes a
donut. The slices become arcs around a ring,
and the empty middle has room for a total or a
label. The pie’s rules still apply: few slices, one
whole, one clear comparison. Avoid nesting
rings inside rings, because the outer rings look
bigger than they are. Karsten judged a pie of
nested rings this way:
“There is little to recommend it for purposes of
precise and comparative study, but for
popular and unscientific purposes it is much
favored” (Karl G. Karsten,
Charts and Graphs

1923, p. 611).
