Stretch every stacked column to the same
height and only shares remain. Each column
answers “what fraction?” instead of “how
many?” Say so in the title, because a shrinking
share is easy to misread as a shrinking
amount. Karsten compared three kinds of
stacked bar chart and preferred this one:
“The only one of the three which stands out as
absolutely simple and clear is the relative
compound bar-chart, which consists of
nothing more than a series of 100% bars” (Karl
G. Karsten,
Charts and Graphs
, 1923, p. 116).
Also called:
percent stacked column chart,
relative bar-chart
